It has become a lot harder to find a great sedan in recent years, as more and more car companies leave these reliable and efficient vehicles behind. Fortunately, there are still some manufacturers that see the value in a great sedan, and you have some impressive options available from companies like Honda. When looking at the 2022 Honda Civic vs 2022 Toyota Corolla, you can see that while the Corolla is a fine sedan with a lot to offer, it repeatedly falls short of the kind of impressive performance, fuel economy, and features the all-new 2022 Civic has to offer.

Both of these vehicles have two engines for you to choose from, which gives you enough flexibility in getting what you need without overwhelming you with too many options. In both cases, however, the engine in the Honda Civic is more powerful than what you can get from Toyota, making the Civic a lot more fun to drive. Even better, both of these engines also give you better fuel economy than their Toyota counterparts, which saves you money while you enjoy the impressive performance they deliver. While both of these vehicles are pretty similar in size, the Honda Civic gives you more cargo space and much more passenger room to enjoy.

Inside, you can find a wide range of great features in both models, but once again, the Honda Civic simply offers more than the Toyota sedan. For example, both start with standard 7-inch infotainment displays, but the largest display in the Corolla is an 8-inch screen, while the Civic can have a 9-inch display. Similarly, although both of these sedans have great available sound systems, the 9-speaker option for the Corolla falls short of the incredible sound from the Civic’s available 12-speaker Bose premium sound system.

Some people think that impressive engines only really matter in things like sports cars or full-size pickup trucks. In reality, every vehicle should have a good engine that makes it fun to drive, even a sedan that might not be designed for pure power. You always want to consider the engine of any car you buy to ensure it has enough power in it to make driving it enjoyable and practical in your area.

Both the 2022 Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla have two engines available, but in both cases, the Honda engines are superior. The starting engine in the Civic is a 2.0L I-4 that provides 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to ensure a smooth and responsive driving experience. By comparison, the standard engine on the Corolla is a 1.8L 4-cylinder that offers just 139 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque, falling short of the kind of power you get with the Honda model.

Looking at their more powerful options, the Honda Civic has an available 1.5L turbocharged I-4 engine, which delivers 180 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque for exceptional performance. This also comes paired with a CVT transmission, and every Honda model includes paddle shifters to put you in control. The Toyota Corolla has an available 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that offers 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, which is certainly better than its standard engine but falls well short of what the Civic has to offer. You can see a clear difference here, and it enables the kind of performance and sportiness for which the Honda Civic is known.

One of the best reasons to choose a sedan over the other kinds of vehicles out there is for the fantastic fuel efficiency that these cars can offer. A sporty sedan can make a great family vehicle, but it can work just as well for singles or couples with busy lives, and that high fuel efficiency lets you skip the gas pump more often. Both the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla offer solid fuel economy, but once again, the Civic comes out on top.

Both of these vehicles have two different engines available, giving you four overall levels of fuel economy to consider, but the Civic wins across the board. The starting engine for the Civic gets an estimated 31 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and 35 mpg combined.^[b] By comparison, the Corolla’s standard engine gets an estimated 30 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 33 mpg combined. The difference might not seem huge, but over several years of driving, it will certainly add up.

Looking at their more powerful engines, the Honda’s available 1.5L turbo gets an estimated 33 mpg in the city, 42 mpg on the highway, and 36 mpg combined.^[b] The Corolla’s available engine, which is not as powerful as the one you can get in the Civic, offers just 31 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg combined. So not only are the Honda Civic’s engines more powerful, but they also have better fuel economy, delivering a superior driving experience.

The interior and how much space it has to offer can be easy to overlook in a sedan, but it is still important for your overall driving experience. While you are not going to find massive interiors with a sedan like you can in a large SUV, you still want to choose an option that gives you plenty of space. From the outside, the 2022 Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are very similar in overall size, but inside they have some important differences.

Both of these vehicles have very similar amounts of headroom in both the front and rear, though you can get about an inch more in the Civic. The more substantial difference is in terms of legroom, especially in the rear: the Civic gives you about 42 inches of front legroom and more than 37 inches of rear legroom. The Toyota Corolla, on the other hand, has 42 inches of front legroom and just under 35 inches of rear legroom. That 2.6-inch difference can really matter if you have adults in the backseats.

In terms of overall space, the Honda Civic once again comes out on top with regard to both passenger and cargo volumes. The Civic gives you up to 99 cu. ft. of total passenger volume in the interior, while the Toyota model has just 88.6 cu. ft. of passenger volume. For your cargo, you get nearly 15 cu. ft. of volume inside the Civic, including the trunk, while the Corolla tops out at about 13 cu. ft. of cargo volume. Overall, your passengers have more room to stretch out in the Honda Civic, and you can load up a lot more stuff on a road trip or while running errands.

The features you get inside your car will depend a lot on the trim and packages you choose. To keep things simple, we will go over some general options for these two vehicles; just keep in mind that what you get depends on the decisions you make. Overall, however, you can get more with the Honda Civic than the Toyota model.

The Civic features a 7-inch infotainment display standard with a 9-inch screen available, plus standard automatic climate control with dual-zone climate control available. You get cruise control standard on every model, along with push-button start and a steering wheel with illuminated controls. The highest trim for the Civic, the Touring, comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system that sounds absolutely amazing.

Much like the Civic, the 2022 Toyota Corolla has a 7-inch infotainment display standard, but the available option is only 8 inches in size, smaller than what Honda offers. Manual air conditioning is standard on the Corolla, with automatic climate control available but no option for dual-zone climate control. Push-button start is also only available as an option. The highest trim, the XSE, comes standard with a 6-speaker sound system and only has a 9-speaker JBL sound system available as part of an optional package, which falls short of the Honda Civic Touring’s standard Bose sound system.

The Toyota Corolla is certainly a decent sedan with some good features, but the 2022 Honda Civic simply gives you more. You have your choice of more powerful engines with superior fuel economy and much more space inside to utilize for cargo and passengers, so everyone stays very comfortable. The features offered on the Civic are also finer overall, including a larger infotainment display and a superior sound system.
