With multiple Car and Driver 10Best Awards and several Kelley Blue Book Best Buy nods to its name, there's no doubting the Honda CR-V's credentials.^{[a] [b]}  The compact SUV has long been a strong option in the competitive segment, consistently meeting the key expectations of what makes a great compact SUV.

That reputation is built on three core strengths: safety, efficiency, and reliability. The CR-V comes standard with Honda Sensing, a comprehensive safety system that helps enhance drivers' confidence on the road. Efficiency is another major advantage, with the CR-V gaining the available hybrid powertrain back in 2020, making it an impressive fuel-efficient option. Reliability rounds out the package, with the CR-V consistently earning strong J.D. Power ratings, reinforcing its status as a dependable long-term choice.^[c] 

However, the CR-V isn't the only highly competitive model in this class, as the Subaru Forester remains a top competitor. Join us as we pit the 2026 Honda CR-V vs 2026 Subaru Forester and see which SUV comes out ahead. 

There are many factors to consider when choosing between compact models, but few are as important as safety. A comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) can significantly boost an SUV's appeal. At the same time, an underwhelming array can be a dealbreaker for those who are looking to protect their most precious cargo. 

So how does the 2026 CR-V fare when it comes to ADAS and other safety-related tech? Pretty well, especially if you're not interested in splurging on a higher trim to access some of the industry's more advanced safety features. 

Every CR-V is equipped with the full Honda Sensing package, which includes standard safety tech like Automated Emergency Braking, Lane-Keeping Assistance, and Forward Collision Warning, as well as surprisingly premium features that are often tough to find at this price. Just take the SUV's Adaptive Cruise Control system and the rear-seat reminder feature that'll ensure you don't overlook a pet or child as you go about your busy day. 

If there's one feature that really speaks to the CR-V's tech-forward approach, it would have to be the Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) system. This feature uses an array of cameras and sensors to read passing signage and display a digitized version right on the dashboard. The SUV's upper trim introduces even more safety features into the mix, from Blind-Spot Warning with Rear Cross-Traffic Warning to Parking Sensors (front/rear) and more. 

While the Forester can't quite match the CR-V's standard safety suite, the compact SUV holds its own thanks to Subaru's own EyeSight package. EyeSight includes a well-rounded array of standard tech, such as Lane Departure and Sway Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Steering, and Pre-Collision Braking.

Honda and Subaru have equipped both models with a well-rounded standard driving assistance system; the key differences lie in the depth rather than the baseline coverage of the technology. EyeSight delivers a consistent camera-based safety suite across every 2026 Forester trim; however, the Honda Sensing Suite builds on that foundation with a broader range of standard enhancements that use radar technology. This added awareness includes safety features such as Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Attention Monitoring.

While the Forester offers simplicity across the board in terms of safety, the CR-V provides a more scalable, tech-forward safety experience. 

The Forester simply can't match the CR-V's efficiency, but to be fair, few models can. Honda prioritized fuel economy in the design of the sixth-generation CR-V. The SUV's entry-level engine does it proud, with the 1.5L turbocharged I-4 offering an EPA-estimated 30 MPG combined.^[d]  Still, it's the available hybrid that really improves the CR-V's eco-friendly profile. 

Honda has paired this compact SUV with a 2.0L I-4 engine that, thanks to an electric motor and lithium-ion battery, delivers an EPA-estimated 43 MPG in the city, making it especially efficient for everyday urban driving and stop-and-go commuting.^[e]  This makes the CR-V Hybrid uniquely suited to the rigors of urban life, as the EPA estimates drivers could potentially spend up to $1,700 in annual fuel costs. 

Even for those who frequently commute on the highway, the hybrid CR-V still delivers a respectable 36 MPG on the highway when equipped with front-wheel drive (FWD).^[e]  It's a strong showing for the CR-V, and it makes the Subaru Forester a tough sell for those who put a premium on fuel economy. 

The Subaru Forester is built around a relatively large 2.5L engine that offers only an estimated fuel economy of 29 MPG combined. Depending on gas prices, that can translate into an extra few hundred dollars spent on gas over the course of a year when compared to the CR-V Hybrid. It also demonstrates how a small gap in miles per gallon can have a big impact on your wallet over the long haul. 

The Forester does offer a hybrid option: the same 2.5L I-4 Boxer engine with an electric motor. The hybrid improves fuel economy, but not as much as the CR-V, since it only achieves 35 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highway, and 35 MPG combined. 

Speed isn't the be-all and end-all in the compact SUV segment, which is generally focused on utility, efficiency, and practicality, but it can make all the difference when you're behind the wheel. While the CR-V and Forester aren't designed with rubber-burning antics or quick lap times in mind, a little extra power never hurts when you're trying to get up to speed or overtake an 18-wheeler on the highway. 

The CR-V packs considerable power for a compact model, with even the base engine delivering 190 hp. That sort of muscle allows the CR-V to tow up to 1,500 lbs, but it's the compact's impressive acceleration that really gives it the edge over its Subaru counterpart.

In independent testing, the non-hybrid CR-V sprints from zero to 60 mph in just 8.1 seconds. The Forester's 180 hp 2.5L base engine demonstrates what a difference the lack of a turbocharger can make, with a comparatively sluggish zero-60-mph time of 8.3 seconds, and the off-road-inspired Wilderness trim logs 8.4 seconds. That's not a huge difference, but it's a whole other story with the hybrids.

When equipped with the hybrid powertrain, the CR-V is a veritable speed demon at 7.1 seconds. Honda's own off-road trim is a few ticks slower at 7.3 seconds, but it still puts the Forester to shame. 

Given all of the advantages that modern hybrid tech brings to the table, it's almost a little hard to understand how Subaru managed to make its compact trail behind in terms of acceleration. Hybrid powertrains should theoretically outperform their solely gas-powered counterparts thanks to the instant torque provided by their electric motors, but the Forester Hybrid clearly didn't get the memo. The SUV logs an 8.6-second zero-to-60-mph, which can make its acceleration feel somewhat sluggish in real-world driving. 

Compact models might trade on their efficiency, but the CR-V is here to prove that smaller SUVs can still hold their own when it comes to cargo space. 

Honda's 2026 model offers an impressive max cargo space of up to 76.5 cu.ft. The Subaru Forester isn't exactly a slouch with 74.4 cu.ft. of max storage, but it lags when it comes to accommodating both passengers and their cargo. When all five seats are in use, the Forester provides just 29.6 cu.ft. of cargo space. The Honda CR-V offers slightly over 28.1 percent more room, with a rear cargo area measuring 39.3 cu.ft.

That extra 10 cu.ft. could have a major impact when it comes time for your next family road trip or youth sports tournament, when cargo and passenger space are both at a premium, and it demonstrates how the CR-V's versatility gives it a marked advantage over other compact offerings.  

The CR-V isn't just the roomier option; it always makes the most of its interior with clever storage solutions that provide easy access to essential supplies and accessories without cluttering. From a hidden underfloor cargo compartment to a large, adjustable center console, the CR-V's low floors and tie-down anchors mean you'll never be hurting for storage options when you choose Honda's CR-V.

The 2026 model once again proves that the Honda CR-V has remained competitive in a crowded compact SUV market. It's easily one of the market's most well-rounded models, thanks to its unique combination of fuel economy and cargo capacity, not to mention its ample safety gear and sheer performance. 

The Forester does boast some impressive resale value. While it has been a routine recipient of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award, the Honda CR-V ultimately delivers the more complete package for the average compact SUV buyer. It also excels in fuel economy, technology, and overall driving experience. Combined with its strong reputation for reliability, comfort, and everyday practicality, the CR-V continues to demonstrate why it remains a benchmark in the compact SUV segment.
