We won’t pretend that we’re not already biased towards Honda; we’re a Honda dealer after all, so of course, we’re going to lean towards their impressive lineup of vehicles when looking at what’s available and what’s to come in the near future. That being said, even for us, the 2022 Honda Civic and everything it will have to offer surpasses our wildest expectations. We’re not just talking about the standard Civic Sedan that you’ve probably already seen when you looked up a “Honda dealer near me,” but also three other options that are absolutely going to dominate the road (and the industry).
The Honda Civic Sedan is already getting a lot of attention, winning awards and being chosen by automotive journalists and news sites as the best four-door in its class. That being said, there’s so much more coming with regards to the Civic that it feels like the industry hasn’t even gotten a taste of what Honda has ready. It’s going to be an onslaught that reminds everyone that sedans and hatchbacks are not going anywhere anytime soon. Let’s take a look at how the Honda Civic is ready to own the road.
First: The 2022 Honda Civic Sedan
Let’s start with what everyone already knows about: the standard 2022 Honda Civic Sedan. We say standard, but this car is anything but standard as 2022 is an all-new model year with a fully redesigned and re-imagined Civic. Still, you can think of this as the baseline that the other three models jump off from, the foundation that they’re built upon.
That being said, this is the sedan to beat, leaving other models like the Nissan Sentra, Kia Forte, and Toyota Corolla well in its wake. It looks better than ever, with a refined exterior that’s sure to turn heads and a sleek design that exemplifies everything we should expect in this type of car. Seriously, it’s gorgeous without being gaudy and offers a very fun and responsive drive.
Two different engines are available for the Civic Sedan: a 2.0L I-4 that delivers 158 hp and a 180 hp 1.5L turbocharged I-4 with boosted torque and next-level performance. If there’s one complaint we have about the Civic Sedan, it’s that it’s only available with a continuously variable transmission, though the Sport and Touring trims feature paddle shifters for extra control. The standard model rides on 16-inch wheels, while the EX trim has 17-inch wheels, and the Sport and Touring both feature 18-inch wheels – all-season tires are provided on all models, along with LED exterior lighting.
The interior of the Civic Sedan is better than ever, with gorgeous details throughout, such as LED gear selection indicators and push-button start as a standard feature. Higher trims feature a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, along with dual-zone automatic climate control and much more. A 7-inch infotainment display is standard, with a 9-inch screen available, along with wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a new 12-speaker Bose premium sound system with a subwoofer.
Second: The 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback
If you like the styling and features of the Honda Civic Sedan, but you want something with a more functional and usable rear cargo area, then check out the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback. This sporty number has the same updated and all-new style as the Sedan, but with a rear hatch that makes it easy to get to everything you’ve got loaded up in the back. The tailgate has been updated from last year with a wider and lower opening that makes it easier to load and unload everything that you need to take with you.
Although we love the performance available for the Civic Sedan, the Hatchback model actually surpasses it thanks to its exclusive Sport Touring trim. While the Touring is the highest trim for the Sedan model, the Sport Touring gives you the amazing features loaded into that trim, with additional precision and control you can’t find on the Sedan model. The Sport Touring features the impressive 180 hp turbocharged engine; what sets this model apart is that you can get a 6-speed manual transmission that’s not available on any Sedan model – or choose the continuously variable transmission with dual-mode paddle shifters for full control over the all-new Civic Hatchback.
As you can see, the Hatchback is the perfect expression of everything the Civic Sedan has to offer, simply taken a step further. In particular, the exterior update really makes the Hatchback shine, with a clean look that speaks to the power it has to offer. If you’re looking for a Civic with a manual transmission, then this is going to be the one for you – at least for now.
Third: The Honda Civic Si
Although we don’t have many specifics about it just yet, Honda has confirmed that a Civic Si model is in the works. This will be based on the all-new and fully redesigned Honda Civic Sedan, but with a more powerful engine for boosted performance. We can’t say exactly what this performance will ultimately look like – as we said, Honda’s lips are pretty sealed on details right now – but it will likely have a more powerful version of the turbocharged engine on offer.
We also expect the Civic Si to have a manual transmission as the standard (and only) option and some other performance upgrades like a standard limited-slip differential. Beyond that, we just don’t know enough yet to really offer more – though it goes without saying that it will enjoy the updated styling of the Sedan model and feature great details throughout the interior. So far, a prototype was shown off in a sleek orange color that will likely be available in the final thing, but we’ll have to wait and see what else is on offer.
Fourth: The Honda Civic Type R
For the pinnacle of Honda Civic performance, we’ll have to look ahead to the Civic Type R, based on the Hatchback rather than the Sedan. If you’ve never checked out the Type R before, then you’re in for a treat – it’s a high-performance hatchback that gives you functionality and power in a way that most other cars can only dream of. Much like the Civic Si, details are frustratingly scarce on what the all-new Type R will have to offer, though a few choice morsels have managed to reach us.
It will almost certainly have a 6-speed manual transmission for those drivers who prefer total control, although some sources are stating that a dual-clutch or automatic transmission may be an available option. The previous-generation Type R has a 306 hp 2.0L 4-cylinder engine on offer, but we expect to see a bit more power come roaring out of the all-new model. Historically, the Type R is one of the most powerful and exhilarating front-wheel drive cars on the road, and the 2022 model will certainly continue to wear that crown.
