If you have been thinking about purchasing a new vehicle, then you’ve come to the right place. When it comes to reliability, affordability, and amazing standard features, nothing can beat the lineup of new Honda cars, specifically the Honda Civic and its many forms. The Civic isn’t just one simple sedan anymore. There are actually six different Honda Civic cars available for 2020 and 2021. And our experts here at Ralph Honda in Rochester, NY, are happy to explore each model and explain the differences between them to help you make a more informed decision. Let’s get started!
2020 Honda Civic Coupe
Starting at $21,050, the Honda Civic Coupe is a two-door model with available seating for up to four or five people. [a] Under the hood, you will find a standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces up to 158 hp. An optional turbocharged engine produces 174 hp, which comes standard on the EX and Touring trim levels. Most trims also come with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), but the Sport model can be fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Every Honda Civic Coupe model comes with the Honda Sensing safety package. This advanced suite of systems includes automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist, road departure mitigation, collision mitigation braking, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow. Available in four trim levels, the base LX model comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, and automatic headlights with high beam control. Inside the cabin, you will find a rearview camera, a 4-speaker sound system, and Bluetooth phone/audio streaming.
The Sport trim gets 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock technology, and a center outlet exhaust. The cabin features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, sport pedals, push-button start technology, and a 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Rolling on 17-inch alloy wheels is the EX model. It adds remote engine start technology, heated side mirrors, heated seats, and a moonroof. It also comes with HD radio, satellite radio, Honda LaneWatch, and dual-zone climate control. Finally, the Touring trim gets 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, and LED headlights on the outside. The cabin gets leather-trimmed seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a navigation system. And if this doesn’t seem like the perfect match for you, maybe one of these next few will fit your wants.
2020 Honda Civic Si Coupe
Starting at $25,200, the Honda Civic Si Coupe is a sportier version of the aforementioned Civic Coupe. [a] Powered by a larger turbocharged engine, this model generates 205 hp and comes with an active damper system for a smoother ride. Equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Civic Si is designed for performance driving.
Its aerodynamic design and sleek profile show just how athletic this model is. It comes with a wing spoiler, center-mounted exhaust, and C-shaped taillights. Rolling on 18-inch black alloy wheels, it even gets an aggressively styled front bumper. Honda Sensing comes standard, and the heated front seats are bolstered with contrasting red accent stitching. As for infotainment, the system is compatible with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Audio. A rearview camera is included as well as a 10-speaker sound system. This and the previous coupe option are both great, but if you want a more traditional sedan, continue on.
2020 Honda Civic Sedan
Starting at $20,800, the new Honda Civic Sedan is a great commuter car. [a] Like the Civic Coupe, the Civic Sedan is offered with either a 158 hp base engine or a 174 hp turbocharged engine. Also standard on all five trim levels is the Honda Sensing package.
Looking at the specific trims, you will notice that they are very similar to the Civic Coupe trims. The LX, Sport, and EX trims all come with the same interior and exterior features. The EX-L is equipped similarly to the Civic Coupe Touring model. The biggest difference in features can be seen on the top-of-the-line Civic Sedan Touring, which comes with heated seats throughout the cabin. It also includes all of the aforementioned features from the Civic Coupe Touring trim.
The main difference between the Civic Coupe and the Civic Sedan is the size. The Sedan model has four doors and more room in the back for adult passengers. It also has more room in the trunk with 15 cu.f.t of space as opposed to the Coupe’s 12 cu.ft. And if you are looking for a sedan, but want something a little bit more powerful, the Si Sedan may be a better fit.
2020 Honda Civic Si Sedan
Starting at $25,200, the Civic Si Sedan is the four-door counterpart to the Civic Si Coupe. It is peppy, powerful, and pleasant to drive. [a] Featuring the same 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, this model pumps out the same 205 hp. It offers the same type of performance that we mentioned earlier while covering the Civic Si Coupe stats. The only difference, again, is in the size.
The exterior of the Civic Si Sedan features LED headlights, fog lamps, C-shaped taillights, and restyled bumpers. Riding on 18-inch matte black alloy wheels, this model is very easy on the eyes. Its four-door body style features the signature lines and sharp angles of the Si brand.
2021 Honda Civic Hatchback
Starting at $22,000, the Civic Hatchback is perfect for small families or dog owners who need a little extra space but don’t want to get an SUV. [a] Out of the Honda cars we’ve mentioned already, this one is the largest. It has available seating for five people and 25.7 cu.ft. of cargo room behind the back seats. If you need more space, you can fold the back seats down to access up to 46.2 cu.ft. of room. Unlike the Coupe and Sedan, the Hatchback comes standard with the 174 hp turbocharged engine and even offers an uprated 180 hp engine on the Sport and Sport Touring trims.
Many of the same basic features carry over onto the various trims of the hatchback model. However, there are a few differences. The base LX rides on 16-inch alloy wheels and features a rear roofline spoiler and power-adjustable side mirrors. Hill-start assist makes it easy to get going on a steep incline, and the automatic climate control system allows you to stay comfortable all year long.
The Sport trim comes with the same features with a leather-wrapped gear shift knob added to the mix. As for the EX model, the same features carry over, including heated seats, a one-touch moonroof, dual-zone climate control, and Honda LaneWatch. Finally, the top-tier Sport Touring comes with center-mounted dual-outlet exhaust, rain-sensing wipers, and a unibody spoiler kit. Inside the cabin, you will find heated seats in the front and back, a 12-speaker stereo with a subwoofer, and a navigation system. It is quite a well-equipped model.
2021 Honda Civic Type R
Starting at $37,495, the new Honda Civic Type R is a street-legal race car. [a] This new model is entirely different from all of the previous Civic models that we’ve talked about. Powered by a turbocharged intercooler 2.0-liter engine, this powertrain generates 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Inside the cabin, you will find heavily bolstered red and black front seats that are designed to keep you in position no matter what speed you are traveling at. Sport pedals have also been installed for better grip, and the flat-bottom steering wheel completes the race car look.
The unique wing spoiler is positioned at almost roof height. This design creates a downforce that keeps the vehicle glued to the pavement at high speeds. Meanwhile, rear diffusers help to reduce the amount of drag and increase performance on the track. There are even vortex generators located above the back windshield. These send air directly to the spoiler for enhanced stability and cornering at high speeds. Several exterior features are made of carbon fiber, including the wing spoiler, side mirror covers, and hood scoop. This is the best, most powerful, and feature-filled Civic on the market.
