Honda Civic
Few cars on the road represent modern sedan sensibilities quite like the Honda Civic, the perfect symbol for what the auto industry has been through over the last half-century. By the early 1960s, Honda had already made a name for itself as a manufacturer of high-quality motorcycles that were incredibly fun to drive—but they wanted to get into the car market.
Their first release, the N360, hit roads in Japan in the late 1960s, followed by a Honda 1300 in 1970; a couple of years later, they found massive success with the Civic. Available for the 1972 model year, the Honda Civic found popularity not only in Japan but here in the US and in many other parts of the world, where its smart design and crisp performance were highly lauded.
It reached American shores around the same time as the 1973 Oil Crisis, so being a subcompact with incredible fuel economy (and the ability to utilize both leaded and unleaded gas) led to its immediate success. Drivers flocked to the Civic to get a vehicle that handled well, was fun to drive, and was incredibly efficient. Even as the crisis passed, drivers stayed true to what the Civic delivered year after year.
A second generation followed that for the 1981 model year, with many more generations since then introducing myriad changes and upgrades. Notably, the launch of the seventh-generation Honda Civic in 2001 saw it grow from a subcompact to a compact model, though it has remained true to its original efficient and sporty conceit.
Over the years, a number of variations and alternative versions of the Honda Civic have been available, such as the performance-focused Type R that delivers greater power while retaining its sleek structure. You can find both sedan and hatchback versions of the Civic, giving you fantastic options to choose from, while a hybrid version has frequently been available since its revolutionary debut for the 2003 model year.
Today, the Civic remains a testament to how impressive and efficient Japanese engineering can be, and it stands in automotive history as one of the all-time best-selling cars in the world.

2024
For the 2024 Honda Civic, the eleventh generation keeps going strong while delivering robust performance, innovative features inside and out, and terrific safety tech. Both the sedan and hatchback models remain available, as well as the standard 2.0L and turbocharged 1.5L engines configured for front-wheel drive.
New for the 2024 model, however, is the return of a hybrid engine, giving you a third powertrain to choose from that delivers remarkable power and incredible fuel efficiency. That is saying something since the Honda Civic is already one of the most efficient compact cars on the road, with fuel economy figures that put most other cars to shame.
Inside the 2024 Civic, you'll find all the same great features that have made this generation a favorite for so many drivers, including soft seats, smart styling, and innovative tech designed to impress. A wireless charging pad is available for the Honda Civic, along with a 9.0-inch infotainment screen and a gorgeous 10.2-inch digital gauge display that makes it easy to keep track of important information while driving.
Heated front seats are perfect for cold winter mornings, with three heat levels designed to keep you toasty without overdoing it. Perhaps best of all, advanced safety technology—like an available blind spot information system with a cross-traffic monitor—makes it easier than ever to stay safe on the road.
2022
With the 2022 Civic, Honda kicks off an all-new, eleventh generation marked by a full redesign and numerous changes inside and out. For starters, a coupe is no longer available for the Civic since sales for that model had been on the decline; instead, a sedan—with a sleek, fastback-inspired look to it—and a hatchback remain on offer.
Starting trims for the 2022 Civic feature an impressive 2.0L four-cylinder engine, while higher-end trims come with a 1.5L turbocharged beauty instead for boosted power and incredible performance. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is now standard, though you can find some hatchback models with a six-speed manual transmission instead; the Civic Si remains a fun and sporty option, while the Type R is a performance-focused trim that is exhilarating to drive.
The interior of the 2022 Honda Civic has once again been revisited, redesigned, and reinvigorated with a gorgeous look and exciting features and options. A 7.0-inch infotainment display is standard for the eleventh generation, with a bold 9.0-inch screen available for enhanced functionality and great looks, along with an available 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster display that makes driving incredibly fun.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, with the larger infotainment system featuring wireless functionality for your smartphone; plus, you can get a Bose premium sound system to elevate your drive. Best of all, the Honda Sensing package that comes standard includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning, and more on every model.
2016
Honda launched the tenth generation of the Civic in the 2016 model year, featuring a complete redesign and a new approach to constructing their popular car. In the past, Honda had made different versions of the Civic for different markets—such as the US and Europe—but this generation introduces a unified approach with a single vehicle to be sold worldwide.
This means Honda now focuses on making one version of the Civic with everything drivers look for, including robust performance, gorgeous styling, and numerous options, including a sedan, hatchback, and coupe. Perhaps most exciting for many drivers, this generation sees the introduction of the remarkable Civic Type R for North America; prior to this, it had only been offered in limited markets like Japan.
Inside, the 2016 Honda Civic enjoys a gorgeous new design and bold look that replaces the two-tier design for the instrument cluster that had been used in previous generations with a streamlined, single-tier approach. Soft materials can be found throughout the interior—particularly at common touch points—to ensure it feels wonderful to be inside, while the spacious interior is great for bringing along family and friends.
A 5.0-inch infotainment display is standard on 2016 models, with a 7.0-inch screen available; as a more recent model, it even includes support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though you will still find physical knobs and controls to keep things simple while you are on the road. Combine that with some new advanced safety features becoming available in the Honda Sensing package, and you have a remarkable entry into the Civic’s legendary history.
2012
For the 2012 model year, Honda released the ninth generation of the Civic with a full redesign that introduced a sleeker style and bold new features. In terms of power, a wide range of options were offered on the 2012 Civic, including both conventional gas engines and a hybrid, with both manual and automatic transmissions on offer.
Fuel efficiency had been boosted once again for this generation, manifesting impressive power that kept people driving for longer between stops at the gas pump. The redesigned exterior of the Honda Civic offers sleek shapes and curves, with both a sedan and a coupe available here in the US. Many drivers were happy to see that the sporty Honda Civic Si remained an option with a powerful new engine designed to deliver greater power and exquisite handling.
Inside, drivers discovered that the interior had also received a redesign, with a new look and plenty of impressive new features meant to make every drive a great one. Most trims feature an Intelligent Multi-Informational Display with a 5.0-inch LCD screen alongside physical meters and gauges.
The overall look and feel of the interior were improved in a number of ways, with a sleek front dash, comfortable seating designed to impress, and great available options like a moonroof and enhanced sound system. Even with this full redesign, Honda further updated the look and style of the exterior and interior of the Civic for the subsequent 2013 model year, proving that they are relentless in their efforts to make the best cars on the road.
