Winter Checklist for Vehicles: How to Winterize Your Car. There are a few things you can do to get your car ready for an impending winter season. Check your tire tread. When getting your car ready for winter, be sure to inspect your tires for tread wear and rotate them during every oil change. To check your tire’s tread, use the “Penny Test.” You do this by taking a penny and placing it in the tread groove of your tire. Place the penny with Lincoln’s head facing you and stick the penny in the tread so that the top of Lincoln’s head is no longer visible. If his head is visible while in the groove, it’s time to replace your tires.
Fill up your tires. Low air pressure in your tires can be potentially dangerous on winter roads. Take your car to a mechanic to check your tire pressure and fill your tires if necessary. If you have prior knowledge on checking tire pressure, you can easily do it yourself at a free tire air pump found at your local gas station or car shop.
Consider snow tires. Switching to snow tires, especially in northern countries or mountain areas that get heavy snow on rough terrain, can help driving on snowy and slippery roads. Tip: snow tires make your MPG (miles per gallon) lower, so only put on snow tires during harsh winter months.
Change your oil and antifreeze. Regular maintenance to your vehicle can only but help to prevent any car troubles during months involving winter driving. Fix your heater. Short drives aren’t too burdensome when you don’t have heat in your car, but consider what would happen if you were stuck in your car for an extended period of time—all the while not having heat. Having a working heater can help prevent daily discomfort, but it can also be a great preventative measure.
Inspect your battery. Your vehicle’s battery capacity lessens in cold weather. Be sure your car is prepared for the winter and have a professional inspect your battery’s fluid and cables. When it comes to winter we know it is important to be prepared. Below is a list of action items to take for winter driving.
Prepare For The Worst Winter: As in any given situation you want to be prepared to tackle the worst especially when it comes to your vehicle in winter. We recommend researching your weather atlas for past winters in your area. Check Your Anti-Freeze Before Winter Hits: Making sure your anti-freeze is working can save you a lot of time and money down the road. Before topping off any anti-freeze, we recommend flushing your car’s coolant system and checking for leaks in the fall before the first freeze.
Have Your Car Battery Tested Before Winter: Battery performance drops significantly on cold weather, so it is essential to check your peak performance. The winter weather makes it harder on the battery cells reducing the battery’s performance. Jumper Cables For Winter: As we stated before the winter weather can be hard on your battery, so you want to make sure you have jumper cables readily available.
Protective Parking From Winter Conditions: To help keep your vehicle out of harsh conditions it is essential to park your car in the garage or put a cover on the car. Inspect Your Heater Before Winter: Seems like a no-brainer, but you want to make sure your defrost and heater are working correctly. Inspect Your Windshield Wipers Before Winter: You want to make sure your windshield wipers are in tip-top condition if you are in an area that experiences rough winters. If you are already seeing cracks in your windshield wipers that is an immediate sign to replace them. We also recommend changing your windshield wiper fluid to ones that have antifreeze inside of the solution.
Check Your Tread Depth Before Winter: Before fall ends it is important to know how much traction you have left on your tires to make sure you are ready for winter. If you decide winter tires are what you want, our service staff will be glad to assist you in purchasing the tires best suited for your vehicle and the Rochester winter. Inspect Your Headlights And Brake Lights: The last thing you want to happen is to be out in a storm and not be able to see. Change To Oil Before Winter: The colder the weather the more important clean oil is. Especially important during start-ups on those sub-zero temps.
Monitor Your Tire Pressure During Winter: Actively checking your tire pressure during the winter and help prevent under-inflation and underperformance. People in winter conditions under 40 degrees should at least have all season tires. Remember, 10 degrees in temp drop can mean as much as 3-6# of pressure loss.

Thanksgiving Program: As we have done for many years, we plan to assist families in celebrating Thanksgiving this November. Due to ongoing COVID concerns, we will repeat the Gift Card Giveaway we began last year. It was enthusiastically received by families, because it gave them more control over their holiday menu and allowed them to enjoy shopping together for the special meal. We created a guide to help donors decide how many families they wish to help.
Family Size & Suggested Donation: Family of 2: $20, Family of 3-5: $40, Family of 6-8: $50, Family of 9+: $60. Please make checks out to GEFS&CC with “Thanksgiving” in the memo line and send to Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, 500 Maiden Lane, Rochester NY 14616. We request you send them by November 1st. For our clients who cannot go out to shop for themselves, we will pair them with a donor. If you want to shop and deliver food to an “adopted” family, please leave a message on our hotline at 397-0604 stating this is what you would like to do. The deadline for donors to sign up for this option is October 15th.
Have a Great Thanksgiving!
We are grateful for your business and humbled by the trust you have shown in us year after year. We hope your holiday is filled with love, laughter, and gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
