Treat Yourself to an Adventure in the 2022 Honda Passport

Published on Oct 28, 2025 by Brianna White

Honda has refreshed its design for the 2022 Passport, giving it a little edgy style to show off the sporty side of Honda’s demeanor. For decades, Honda has been tearing up race courses with its very capable dirt bikes and is well known in the desert racing circuit as well. This year, Honda is transitioning the Passport into off-road capability to show off its skills with more than just motorbikes. The new TrailSport mid-level trim for the 2022 Passport gets a number of appearance upgrades to show off the Passport’s utility, and it comes standard with independent four-wheel suspension and Intelligent Traction Management for selecting drive modes suited to the terrain. We’re excited about seeing this fresh face on a well-loved SUV here at Ralph Honda, and as your Rochester Honda Passport dealer, we want to share our enthusiasm about the 2022 Honda Passport.

What’s New for the 2022 Passport

This year, Honda is starting a new trim level for its lineup with the TrailSport, oriented towards mild off-roading capability. The 2022 Passport is the first vehicle to go on sale with this new trim, which will showcase the more adventurous side of the popular SUV and stand out with its striking orange accents. Highlights of the new TrailSport include features like a standard satellite-based navigation system, all-wheel drive that offers mud and sand driving modes, and 18-inch wheels fitted with tires that have more aggressive tread for handling uneven terrain. Though the TrailSport is made more for mild off-roading than extreme trail riding, the all-wheel drive system for the 2022 Passport is assisted by the four-wheel independent suspension and can target specific wheels to send torque where it’s needed.

Other features of the TrailSport exterior include customized fascia for the front and rear of the 2022 Passport, fender flares, orange front tow hooks, and badging to signify its distinctive appearance. Inside, the TrailSport has trim-exclusive orange accent stitching and ambient lighting that glows in an attractive amber color throughout the cabin, plus unique orange badges embroidered on the front headrests. For the other Passport trims, updates to the front and rear fascia give the SUV a new grille design that shares a resemblance to the Honda Ridgeline truck, the dual rear exhaust finishers have been enlarged, and the interior gains a new diamond design for models with perforated leather upholstery. Never to be outdone on safety, Honda also adds more standard safety features with a new rear-seat reminder and rear safety belt reminders.

How the 2022 Passport Drives

People are more likely to take their 2022 Passport on the road than anywhere else, and Honda has made sure that performance on the pavement is both comfortable and capable. Expect a well-insulated, quiet cabin that isolates you from the bumps in the road in much the same way as a smooth-riding minivan, but with the capability and ground clearance of an SUV. Because Honda engineered the suspension system for on-road comfort that can translate to off-road capability, the traction and stability control makes driving on winding roads a surprisingly nimble experience. Ground clearance of 8.1 inches provides ample height to easily manage snowy roads or mud, especially with the available all-wheel drive equipped.

Those who purchase the TrailSport trim or add all-wheel drive capability will find the 2022 Passport can tackle mildly rugged terrain with satisfying agility. Shifting into mud or sand mode with Intelligent Traction Management will change the driving dynamics of the Passport to match the terrain, with electronic shifts in torque and traction control so the wheels can gain grip for optimal performance. With the more aggressive tread on the TrailSport’s tires, the Passport will have improved purchase on uneven terrain, yet it will still ride smoothly here in town when you get back to civilization. The power of the 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers outstanding performance for zipping past slow drivers on I-90 or scrambling up an incline with passengers and cargo on board.

Technology On and Off the Road

For 2022 Passport models, Honda has made technology features across all trims a generous display of modern connectivity and convenience. Enjoy the simplicity of pairing your smartphone with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and leave your charging cord at home when you use the standard wireless charging pad. The eight-inch touchscreen in the center stack gives you access to the HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and the features available through the optional HondaLink system, including a WiFi hotspot. When you arrive back at home, the convenience of the standard HomeLink remote system allows you to open the garage door, turn on lights, or disarm your home security system with the press of a button.

Honda provides numerous driver-assist technologies to keep you and your passengers safe, all of which can prevent or lessen the effect of potential accidents. The standard suite of features includes a Road Departure Mitigation System to ensure your 2022 Passport stays safely on the pavement, a Collision Mitigation Braking System to help you stop before an impact occurs, and the Lane Keeping Assist System to make sure you don’t wander out of your lane by mistake. All these safety features were created to offer support to the driver with alerts and mild steering or braking assistance, and the Adaptive Cruise Control feature will make highway cruising easier with its ability to slow down in traffic and resume your set speed when the way is clear.

With the TrailSport trim, the satellite navigation system is a standard feature to assist in navigating anywhere using a 3-D mapping system that displays topography on the infotainment screen. Before you take your 2022 Passport on an off-road excursion, view a map of the area to see whether or not the terrain is manageable in terms of its difficulty. This feature allows you to download the map of the terrain you wish to navigate and continue to have access to navigation even when service isn’t available. Being able to go anywhere without worrying about losing your way is just one of many ways the 2022 Passport makes travel a calming pleasure.

Conveniences for Adventure and Comfort

Three trim levels are available for the 2022 Passport, with the entry-level EX-L, the mid-level TrailSport, and the uppermost Elite. Every 2022 Passport comes with a comfortable, spacious interior that lends itself well to traveling long distances, particularly if you travel with a lot of luggage. Rear seat passengers will enjoy nearly the same amount of legroom as the passengers in front, so even taller people will be able to stretch out and relax when you take a road trip. The cargo area is large, even for an SUV, with 50.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row of seats. That’s more than triple the amount of room you would have in a midsize sedan trunk, and when you want to fold down the rear seats for large items like a couch or dresser, that space doubles in size.

Standard features like tri-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a powered liftgate offer the comfort of traveling without having to compromise when you purchase the EX-L. Conveniences for the TrailSport trim expand to include illuminated beverage holders, leather-trimmed seats with contrasting orange stitching, and a heated wiper zone feature to prevent your wipers from being frozen to the windshield in cold New York weather. For the Elite trim, all passengers can warm up with heated front and rear seats when it’s cold, and front-seat passengers can cool down with ventilated seats when it’s hot. In addition to numerous upgrades, the Elite trim also gains access to HomeLink service, a ten-speaker audio system, and a WiFi hotspot as standard equipment.

Angle for the 2022 Passport

Aside from the driving enjoyment and the comfort of the interior, the 2022 Passport offers clever under-floor storage in the cargo area that can organize tools or supplies you want to keep in the SUV and provides a place to stow your valuables out of sight when you reach your destination in the wilderness or the city. Adventures can happen any day of the week with the Passport, whether you want to tow a trailer loaded with supplies for camping or haul your boat down to Lake Ontario, as the model is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds. Even the approach and departure angles offer better performance for exploring with 21.1 degrees on approach and 24.3 for departure to be able to drive up and down inclines safely without damaging the bumpers. Where will you adventure with your 2022 Passport? Take one for a test drive here at Ralph Honda to discover just how much fun you could have with your new SUV today!
